New Mammogram Guidelines: What You Should Know

If you’re confused about when you should start getting mammograms, you’re not alone. The American Cancer Society’s new guidelines recommend women begin having mammograms at the age of 45. However, this doesn’t align with the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force’s recommendation of 50 years old or the American College of Radiology’s recommendation of 40 years old.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. From athletes on television to special packaged products at stores, we see pink ribbons everywhere, reminding us there is still no cure for this serious disease.

With so many reminders about breast cancer, it can be easy to forget that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women – causing one in three deaths each year. In fact, more women die every year from heart disease than from all forms of cancer combined.

Flat stomach - Tummy tuck or liposuction?The desire for a youthful, flat and smooth stomach is common, but so is confusion about the best way to achieve it.

Roy Hong, M.D., a board-certified cosmetic surgeon at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, says that he sees many patients in his practice that come in wanting liposuction to remove abdominal (stomach) fat, but do not realize the unintended consequences this could have on their appearance if the skin over the stomach has lost elasticity because of age, weight gain, pregnancy or some combination of those factors.

e-cigaretteQuestions surrounding e-cigarettes continue to surface: Are they really a healthier alternative to cigarettes?  Does tobacco-free mean problem-free? And is it okay for these products to be marketed to minors?

With the battery-powered devices growing in popularity -- particularly among teens and young adults -- Democratic members of Congress are asking the FDA to tackle some of these questions sooner than later in a report published earlier this week.
