Hepatitis C – Should All Boomers Be Tested?

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne disease that, if left untreated, can cause serious damage to the liver.  Just recently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued a recommendation that a simple blood test for Hepatitis C be offered to all people born between 1945 and 1965.

What does this recommendation mean?

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force studies the overall impact of a preventive service, like a medical screening test, if it is offered to a large population of people. Their recommendations are intended to guide primary care physicians across the country. The group has advanced its recommendation for Hepatitis C (Hep C) testing to a Category B, which means there is evidence to show that testing the general public for Hep C provides a clinical benefit for some people – that the cost and inconvenience of screening is outweighed by the overall benefits to the population. This mirrors the recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control.
