Tips for Buying Safe, Thoughtful Toys

Hundreds of new toys hit store shelves during the winter holidays, and it can be overwhelming trying to find the right toy for the children in your life. Not only do you want the gift to be fun, but you want to make sure it’s safe and developmentally appropriate.

The latest toy report from the United States Public Interest Research Group Education Fund shows it pays to be vigilant when researching toys, as 22 potentially toxic and unsafe toys are still for sale at popular retail stores. Multiple toys tested positive for toxic chemicals, including chromium and phthalates, which can harm a child’s development. Researchers also found toys that pose a choking hazard, are too loud for a child’s ears and magnet toys that can cause serious injury if swallowed.

To get an idea of how to stay sexually healthy, we asked Drew Ho, a family practice nurse practitioner with Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation in Albany, for advice.
