Wildfires, Poor Air Quality Exacerbates Breathing Problems

Driven by an unprecedented drought and above-average temperatures, wildfires continue to scorch hundreds of thousands of acres throughout California. Since the start of 2015, more than 5,200 fires have burned through nearly 218,000 acres of vegetation, according to Cal Fire. Sutter Health doctors say these fires have a negative impact on our air quality, making it difficult for people with respiratory problems to breathe.

Dr. Tze-Ming Chen, a pulmonary and critical care specialist with the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, says smoky conditions cause great respiratory distress for many of his patients.

For many of us, the lush and beautiful season of springtime brings suffering. Red eyes, a runny nose and stuffed up head make springtime hard to bear. If you are in the thick of it right now, consider these three tips for getting your allergies under control.

AVOID

Although it’s a shame to say it, allergy sufferers may be better off indoors during the spring. Staying inside, with windows closed and AC on, can help reduce the amount of pollen in your environment.

If you must leave the house (and most of us must) don’t forget to do the same with your car: Close windows and use the recirculated air setting to avoid pollen.

Neti Pot Safety Advisory

Do you regularly use a neti pot to clear your sinuses? Have you considered it as a possible relief for allergies and stuffy noses?Then you should note the new “heads up” from the FDA about neti pot safety.

Two deaths in Louisiana in 2011 may have been attributable to use of a neti pot with tap water that was contaminated with a certain amoeba. These “bugs” can stay alive in the nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections.
